The Airport is a form of infrastructure that allows one to produce and refuel air units, while also providing a minor plus bonus tax to the city the airport is located in. All nations' capitals begin with an airport by default, however, building additional airports requires the targeted city to have over 500,000 population.
The aircraft carrier serves as a partial alternative to an airport, functioning as a mobile and seagoing airbase when traveling from abroad and overseas. However, aircraft carriers can be considerably expensive to manufacture and maintain, and new aircraft cannot be built or recruited on the carrier's deck.
Formula to Calculate the Cost of an Airport[]
Cost[]
The cost of an airport is determined by the population of the city and requires the city to have over 500,000 population for construction. However, acquiring Airfield Expansion within the Mass Production doctrine can effectively reduce both construction cost, construction speed, and halve the population requirement of airports to 250,000.
Strategy[]
Basic Construction Locations[]
The player should have an airport every 500 to 1,000 km to allow your air units to refuel quickly. Airports are essential to strategies such as the Blitzkrieg, and large nations should have three to five airports to assure that their air force does not go without fuel. One should place airports near their borders, however, not too close or the airport might be at risk of being conquered. It is recommended to build Forts in the cities that you have built airports in.
However, in rarer cases where your territory is not significantly large, you can use your capital city as the sole airport, though it is highly recommended to construct additional airports, especially the aircraft carrier, across dispersed locations for better traveling and refueling efficiency.
Aircraft Spam[]
WARNING: Despite the effectiveness of this strategy, one should avoid recruiting over 200 aerial divisions at once, as it risks breaking the game rules and may result in punishments and penalties. However, this warning may not fully apply in a private server.
Aircraft spam is a tactic involving the deployment of an overwhelming number of aircraft, including bombers, attackers, transport planes, and fighters, to exploit the strategies of aviation. This strategy can be executed by acquiring numerous cities with populations exceeding 500,000. Subsequently, obtaining Airfield Expansion within the Mass Production doctrine can facilitate the buildup process, as it allows for a reduction in construction cost, construction speed, and halves population requirement for airports to 250,000. Once this is achieved, you can systematically build airports by hovering over all your cities or construct them simultaneously in groups during financial constraints.
Aircraft spamming, despite its substantial financial burden, offers several advantages for each type of aircraft involved:
- Bombers: Mass scorching of cities, potentially destroying every factory, crippling ground units, and reducing development/infrastructure tiers.
- Attackers: Mass assault on ground units with overwhelming power, along with the potential to sink capital ships.
- Fighters: Significant strengthening of airspace, rendering enemy bomber spam useless. One can also use one of their many fighters to intercept enemy aircraft from abroad.
- Transport Aircraft: Transportation of large numbers of ground units to enemy territory, including capital cities, square cities, developed cities, or cities behind the frontlines.
Trivia[]
- There are airports in
Liechtenstein,
Andorra,
Monaco, and
San Marino even though in real life there are no commercial airports in these microstates.
- The airport icon used in game is the same as an airport with no planes in it within Hearts of Iron IV.
