Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Tier II nation located in Southern Europe , more specifically the Balkan Peninsula. It borders
Croatia,
Serbia, and
Montenegro.
Background[]
Bosnia and Herzegovina, sometimes referred to simply as Bosnia, is a country in Southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. It has had permanent settlement since the Neolithic Age. By the early historical period, it was inhabited by Illyrians and Celts. Christianity arrived in the 1st century, and by the 4th century, the area became part of the Western Roman Empire. Germanic tribes invaded soon after, followed by Slavs in the 6th Century. In 1136, Béla II of Hungary invaded Bosnia. During this time, Bosnia became virtually autonomous and was even proclaimed a kingdom in 1377 by Kulin Ban who came from Slavonia (modern day Croatia). The Ottoman Empire invaded Bosnia in 1463 and the occupation lasted over 400 years, which greatly changed mainly the religion of this country by islamization of Roman-catholic population. Ottomans brought great changes to the political and administrative system, introduced land reforms, and class and religious distinctions, but while most of the European countries were industrializing, Ottoman Empire was having big problems with industrializing. A series of uprisings began in 1831, which culminated in the Herzegovinian rebellion, a widespread peasant uprising, in 1875. The conflict eventually forced the Ottomans to cede administration of the country to Austro-Hungarian Empire through the Treaty of Berlin in 1878. The establishment of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929 brought the redrawing of administrative regions in their country, which purposely avoided all historical and ethnic lines and removed every trace of any nation's identity in that Kingdom except Serbian identity. Yugoslavia was conquered by Wehrmacht forces in World War II, and Bosnia was ceded to the Independent State of Croatia (NDH). Presence of various chetnik and partisan forces in Bosnia lead to major genocides of local Muslim population. After the war, Bosnia, along with Croatia and Slovenia were occupied by Yugoslav forces. Shortly after, Yugoslavia adopted a communist government, which lasted from 1945 to 1990, when finally in 1990 it broke up. Three years of Serbian aggression began in 1992 which caused around 100,000 deaths and 2 million people to flee Bosnia. |

Threats[]
Since Bosnia and Herzegovina is a weak nation, it can be very easily invaded early on. This means that nearly every country on its borders and close to it is capable of conquering it. The biggest threats are:
Turkey needs you for the
Ottoman Empire and it's also quite close to you. If you see
Turkey expanding in the Balkans, quickly send an ally request to them. If they deny, you're pretty much dead, unless you are well prepared.
Austria usually isn't that much of a threat since it's usually taken by
Germany, but if it isn't, it's probably forming either the
Austro-Hungarian Empire or the
Holy Roman Empire. If you see it expanding into the Balkans, that's a clear sign it's forming either the
Austrian Empire or
Austro-Hungarian Empire. In case you see that happen, try allying
Austria and if they decline, you're most likely dead. Even if they formed the
Austrian Empire instead, they'll still probably conquer you too since you're weak, and on its border.
Germany is a threat for literally every European country, as it's very powerful and the most capable European country to form the
European Union. It is recommended you try allying it right when the game starts. If they accept, that's great since that means they probably aren't forming the
European Union. Even if they are forming it, they must break ties with you, which sets up a truce between you and
Germany, therefore giving you time to prepare for a bloody war.
- This may sound weird, but
Romania can actually be a big threat to Bosnia and Herzegovina if you're forming the
Kingdom of Bosnia, since
Serbia is needed for
Romania's formable, the
Kingdom of Dacia.
Serbia may start off weak, but EVERY player that chooses
Serbia will always form
Yugoslavia, which requires Bosnia and Herzegovina. If somebody is
Serbia, it is suggested to start taking them out right away, either by yourself or with strong allies.
- Many Italian players usually conquer a large part of the Balkans, and they usually start by taking
Slovenia,
Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Strategy[]
Playing as Bosnia is very hard but it can be a fun challenge for experienced players or players wanting to test their skills.
Starting moves[]
When loaded in, immediately construct 2 electronics factories, one in Sarajevo, the other one in a random city to the north/northeast and buy 4 gold and copper. While they are building, research factory output 1, recruit a general with an attack/defense bonus and make 50k infantry. Save some manpower for later and justify on Montenegro. Why Montenegro? 3 reasons:
- You'll need extra money for the long run.
- It has ports, allowing you to build a navy. Very useful.
- It brings you one step closer to forming
Kingdom of Bosnia
By now, the electronics factories should have finished. Sell 20 elecs (5 per country) for extra income. After that build 2 fertilizer factories for more income. You're gonna need it all, trust me. When the justification finishes, make 100 artillery, declare on Montenegro, weaken up their home guard until 10k remains, capture one of their northern cities, wait for their home guard to die to your troops and take over them.
Make sure to annex all their cities and seize 75% of their treasury. After that, turn Government and Research spending to max, wait for the unrest to go below the gold line, switch to nationalism for reduced military upkeep and build 2 destroyers, a battleship and preferably a submarine.
Construct a steel and motor manufactory and justify on Serbia because their capital Belgrade is a square city, allowing you to build tanks. But here, we face a first major hurdle. You guessed it, it's Italy.
War with Italy[]
By this point, Italy probably took over Slovenia and Croatia, so now they have a major border with you. Try to ally them first. if they accept, take over Serbia, build 1600 tanks in Belgrade and split them in 2 groups. Send one to conquer Hungary and Romania (it's recommended to research Tank mobility because of Transylvania) and send the other to small African countries for colonization. Good starting points are Guinea and Sierra Leone for aluminum and titanium respectively.
If they decline however, rush Serbia as fast as you can and build 2000 tanks in Belgrade. Split them in 3 groups. Send the largest one to Sarajevo, keep one in Belgrade and sent the 3rd one to the city you constructed factories in.
When Italy declares, send your destroyers and battleship to where they can bombard Italian troops and tanks, preferably somewhere near Zadar or Split for maximum effect. Also construct another submarine in one of Montenegro's port cities if Italy transports troops across the Adriatic.
If they use destroyers to escort, make another 300 artillery and pair it up with those 100 artillery from before and split it in 2 groups so you can bomb troop transports and destroyers more efficiently.
When Italy exhausts their manpower they may try to white peace. DO NOT accept if you want to form Kingdom of Bosnia or want more land and income. When Italy runs out of manpower or rage quits, you can retake your lands and take Italy's if you want, although it's strongly recommended. When you do, select same peace terms as Montenegro's and form Kingdom of Bosnia with your newly incorporated lands.
Also make sure to construct Civillian factories to prevent your stability going haywire and making all your progress useless. Now you can return to those tanks in Africa, most likely in Guinea or Sierra Leone or both. Justify on Senegal for its phosphate and Gambia for its treasury. Keep expanding in Africa by taking countries with resources you need or want. Don't forget to train your tanks for Jungle specialization as the countries you'll be taking are infested with it.
