Denmark is a Tier II Scandinavian/Nordic nation located in Europe .

Background[]

The history of Denmark as a unified kingdom began in the 8th century, but historic documents describe the geographic area and the people living there—the Danes—as early as 500 AD. These early documents include the writings of Jordanes and Procopius. With the Christianization of the Danes c. 960 AD, it is clear that there existed a kingship. Queen Margrethe II can trace her lineage back to the Viking kings Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth from this time, thus making the Monarchy of Denmark the oldest in Europe. The area now known as Denmark has a rich prehistory, having been populated by several prehistoric cultures and people for about 12,000 years, since the end of the last ice age.

Denmark's history has particularly been influenced by its geographical location between the North and Baltic seas, a strategically and economically important placement between Sweden and Germany, at the center of mutual struggles for control of the Baltic Sea (dominium maris baltici). Denmark was long in disputes with Sweden over control of Skånelandene and with Germany over control of Schleswig (a Danish fief) and Holstein (a German fief).

Eventually, Denmark lost these conflicts and ended up ceding first Skåneland to Sweden and later Schleswig-Holstein to the German Empire. After the eventual cession of Norway in 1814, Denmark retained control of the old Norwegian colonies of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland. During the 20th century, Iceland gained independence, Greenland and the Faroese became integral parts of the Kingdom of Denmark and North Schleswig reunited with Denmark in 1920 after a referendum. During World War II, Nazi Germany invade Denmark and the Danish just surrendered after 6 hours. Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, and was never liberated directly from any of the allies, in the sense that they got liberated due to Nazi Germany's collapse (The German troops in Denmark Surrendered and the Danes fighting for freedom began taking back control), though Soviet Forces did land in Bornholm and stayed there for a year, technically making the Soviets, the Danish liberators. After World War 2, it joined the United Nations. With the emergence of the subsequent Cold War, Denmark was quick to join the military alliance of NATO as a founding member in 1949. Denmark was also 1 of the founding European Union members.

Base Statistics[]

Economy[]

Denmark produces $206,651 income at start, $1,396 from its resources. Its population means it loses 1.9 consumer goods at default, which is normal for all nations. It scales depending on your population.

Military[]

Denmark's Home Guard consists of 20,000 men and is located in Copenhagen. Denmark's all flat terrain makes it a hard place to defend. Since all minor nations tend to start with approximately 60k manpower, you can build up to 60-70k infantry if needed.

Geography[]

The land tiles of Denmark do not match its current geography. As islands such as Funen are half the size, Zealand is smaller and looks odd - North Jutland Island loses its peninsula. Terrain is mainly flat, but Denmark has few islands making it little harder to conquer. Using submarines against Germany or Sweden can be useful in early-stage. Denmark borders Germany Sweden and through water Norway and Poland.

Cities[]

Denmark has 12 cities, with Copenhagen being the largest with a base population of 1,085,000 people. Århus (237,551), Odense (158,222), and Aalborg (122,219) are its largest cities aside from Copenhagen. It's remaining cities are scattered with populations from 7,000 to 70,000. Denmark's Cities are distributed fairly across it's territory, although more than half of its populated resides on the island of Zealand, where the capital Copenhagen is.

Strategy[]

Invade Sweden if it is AI. As the largest threat is Germany, try allying Germany's enemies or tell Germany not to invade Denmark. Also invade Norway if it is AI, as it has strategic value and the player can move their capital to cities such as Vossavangen under Mountainous terrain.

The player can also invade the United Kingdom and the Baltics. However, the United Kingdom is often a player.

Then, the player should try to eliminate their top threat, Germany. From this point on, the player should be fine on their own.

German Invasion[]

If Germany happens to invade the player, they should try to get help from a different country. If a good France player joins against Germany, the player should be fine. However, if the player has to fight on their own, they should station artillery in Northern Jutland. Entrench troops on the border and research their technology. If Germany is invading the player in the winter, the Severe Winter biome will give the player a large entrenchment boost. If possible, build a few attackers to defend as well. Germany should receive many losses if they are not prepared. Then, try to negotiate a white peace with Germany. Now, the player can take advantage of the truce time to expand before Germany possibly invades again.

Threats[]

Your primary threats are Germany and the United Kingdom. As both are regional powers, allies are needed. Sweden is also a threat to Denmark, with easy access to bypass the Øresund and could easily snipe your capital. Denmark is also a place with little expansion options as most countries will take over a year to conquer.

The smallest countries near to you would be the Benelux region, the Baltic region, Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. You can also opt for colonialism, although that would take much longer. An ideal place to colonise would be the island of Hispaniola, with a small Home Guard and high population.

Your new threats after taking over Scandinavia would be Russia, as they could seek to take over Northern Europe.

Essentially, Denmark is mostly under risk. It is why it is considered a Tier II nation along with its lesser value to the Swedish nation. Denmark is playable but your rise is much slower.
