The Grand Principality of Circassia was a historical state located in the Northwestern Caucasus region, primarily encompassing the territory of present-day Circassia, which is part of the Russian Federation. It emerged in the 15th century as an independent political entity and was ruled by the Circassian aristocracy, commonly known as the "Princes of Circassia" or "Circassian Princes."
Circassia was predominantly inhabited by various Circassian tribes, including the Adyghe, Kabardians, and other related ethnic groups. The region had a complex social structure, and the Circassians were known for their warrior traditions and resistance against external powers. Throughout its history, the Grand Principality of Circassia faced numerous military conflicts with neighboring powers, such as the Ottoman Empire, Crimean Khanate, and the expanding Russian Empire. The Circassians fiercely resisted Russian encroachment and attempts at annexation. However, by the mid-19th century, the Russian Empire intensified its efforts to subjugate Circassia. The Russian-Circassian War, which lasted from 1763 to 1864, resulted in the defeat of the Circassians. The Russian Empire gradually expanded its control over the region, leading to the complete annexation of Circassia in 1864. Following the Russian conquest, many Circassians were displaced or forced to flee their homeland. Large numbers of Circassians were either killed or deported to other parts of the Russian Empire, particularly the Ottoman Empire. This mass exodus is often referred to as the Circassian Genocide or Ethnic Cleansing of Circassians. |
