Martinique is a small Tier II island nation located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean.
Background[]
Martinique, called Madinina by the natives of the island, and also known as the "Island of Flowers", is an island located in the Caribbean, specifically in the archipelago of the Lesser Antilles. It is a French island region and a French department; it is administered within the framework of a single local authority led by the assembly of Martinique. It is also an outermost region of the European Union. It is also an associate member of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
Christopher Columbus is the first European to set foot in Martinique on June 15, 1502, during his fourth trip to the “Indies”. However, it had already been discovered (without stopping there) by Alonso de Ojeda during his expedition of 1499 - 1500. It also appears on the map established by Juan de la Cosa in 1500 and it is then found on Alberto Cantino's map (1502) under the name of Ioüanacéra or Joanacaera.
After disembarking in Martinique in 1502, Christopher Columbus did not take “possession” of the island which continued to be ruled by the indigenous populations. The first French colony was established in 1635 by Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc.
Martinique is located in the volcanic arc of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, between Dominica to the north and St. Lucia to the south, about 420 km north-northeast of the coastal Venezuela, and about 865 km in the east-southeast of the Dominican Republic. The continental shelf which can be exclusively exploited by France was extended to 350 miles from the coast in 2015 (i.e. beyond the exclusive economic zone, which remains set at 200 miles from the coast), following the favorable opinion of the United Nations.
