Background

The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. It is part of the broader Micronesia region and consists of over 600 islands spread across an exclusive economic zone of over 1 million square miles.

The FSM is a federal democratic republic with four states - Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap. It gained independence in 1986 after previously being part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands administered by the United States.

The country has a population of around 110,000 people, with the majority belonging to the Chuukese, Kosraean, Pohnpeian, and Yapese ethnic groups. The official languages are English and the four state-level languages.
