Somalia is a Tier III nation, located in East Africa , specifically straddling the coast on the horn of Africa.
Background[]
Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia is a sovereign country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by three different countries and three different bodies of water: Ethiopia and
Djibouti to the west, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Guardafui Channel and Somali Sea to the east and
Kenya to the southwest. Somalia has the longest coastline on Africa's mainland, and its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains, and highlands. Climatically, hot conditions prevail year-round, with periodic monsoon winds and irregular rainfall.
Somalia has been described as the most culturally homogeneous country in Africa. Around 85% of its residents are ethnic Somalis, who have historically inhabited the northern part of the country. Ethnic minorities are largely concentrated in the southern regions. The official languages of Somalia are Somali and Arabic. Most people in the country are Muslims, the majority of whom belong to the Sunni sect of Islam. In antiquity, Somalia was an important commercial center. It is among the most probable locations of the fabled ancient Land of Punt. During the Middle Ages, several powerful Somali empires dominated the regional trade, including the Ajuran Empire, the Adal Sultanate, the Warsangali Sultanate, and the Sultanate of the Geledi. The toponym Somalia was coined by the Italian explorer Luigi Robecchi Bricchetti (1855–1926). Modern-day Somalia was controlled by the Italians and British in the years leading up to World War II. The British had a colony called British Somaliland while the Italian colony was called Italian Somaliland. During World War II, the Italians conquered British Somaliland in 1940 but were pushed out of East Africa in 1941. Remnants of these Italians defending Italian East Africa surrendered on September 8, 1943. In the years before the current civil war, Somalia was a socialist state. They fought a war with Ethiopia over the contested Ogaden region, appropriately named the Ogaden War. The Somalis sought to incorporate the region into a "Greater Somalia". The Ethiopians, under a socialist regime, were supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba. The Somalis then looked to the Soviet's arch-rival, the United States, for help. Somalia lost the war and broke ties with the entire Second World and Soviet Bloc with the exception of Romania and China. The Somali Civil War started in 1990 when armed rebel groups sought to topple the Somali regime led by Siad Barre. The United Nations intervened and eventually set up a transitional government which lasted until 2009 when the current phase of the Somali Civil War started. Radical Islamists once held a great amount of territory but have since been pushed back. In the recent years, terrorist attacks have destabilized the country further. |
