The idea that the southern German states of Bavaria, Württemberg, Baden and Hesse-Darmstadt forming a federation was referred to as the South German Confederation in 1866-1869, due to Article IV of the Peace of Prague (Which ended the Austro-Prussian War) stating this possibility (literally: "to meet in association"). However, due to disagreements between themselves, the southern German states led to the abandoning of the idea. Later, as the Kingdom of Prussia formed the North German Confederation as a new federal German state, the Prussians created defensive treaties and alliances, known as the Schutz and Trutz Alliances. In 1870-1871, after
France's defeat, the North German Confederation absorbed the southern German states and proclaimed the
German Empire.
