Srivijaya was a Buddhist thalassocratic empire based on the island of Sumatra (in modern-day Indonesia), which influenced much of Southeast Asia. Srivijaya was an important centre for the expansion of Buddhism from the 7th to the 11th century AD. Srivijaya was the first polity to dominate much of western Maritime Southeast Asia. Due to its location, Srivijaya developed complex technology utilizing maritime resources. In addition, its economy became progressively reliant on the booming trade in the region, thus transforming it into a prestige goods-based economy.
The earliest reference to it dates from the 7th century. A Tang dynasty Chinese monk, Yijing, wrote that he visited Srivijaya in year 671 for six months. The earliest known inscription in which the name Srivijaya appears also dates from the 7th century in the Kedukan Bukit inscription found near Palembang, Sumatra, dated 16 June 682. Between the late 7th and early 11th century, Srivijaya rose to become a hegemon in Southeast Asia. It was involved in close interactions, often rivalries, with the neighbouring Mataram, Khmer and Champa. Srivijaya's main foreign interest was nurturing lucrative trade agreements with China which lasted from the Tang to the Song dynasty. Srivijaya had religious, cultural and trade links with the Buddhist Pala of Bengal, as well as with the Islamic Caliphate in the Middle East. Although it was once thought of as a maritime empire, new research on available records suggests that Srivijaya was primarily a land-based polity rather than a maritime power, fleets were available but acted as logistical support to facilitate the projection of land power. In response to the change in the maritime Asian economy, and threatened by the loss of its dependencies, the kingdoms around the Malacca Straits developed a naval strategy to delay their decline. The naval strategy of the kingdoms around the Malacca Strait was mainly punitive; this was done to coerce trading ships to be called to their port. Later, the naval strategy degenerated to raiding fleet. The kingdom ceased to exist in the 1025 CE after several raids were launched by Chola empire upon their ports. After Srivijaya fell, it was largely forgotten. It was not until 1918 that French historian George Cœdès, of l'École française d'Extrême-Orient, formally postulated its existence. |
Economy and Manpower[]
The economy of Srivijaya is a very high at around 2.8 million dollars (with 50% stab and standard 240,000 troops) without upgrades or developing cities. pushing it high above the rankings at 8th place above Germany but below Russia. and making it the 4th richest Asian country, above Pakistan but below Japan.
Srivijaya has a large manpower capacity of 1,350,361 with the increase of around 4,300, making it able to support a large military.
Resources[]
Srivijaya produces a high amount of oil at +17.5. but with the downside of not really producing any other significant resources which are +1 gold and +1 aluminum.
Strategy[]
The Srivijaya Empire is a very easy formable that can be taken with small amounts of preparation. All nations border Indonesia, are usually AI and, have small Home Guard units. Consequently, if Indonesia is a player, this formable will almost always be seen.
Singapore: justify a conquest war goal, bring ~100k infantry and annex it
Brunei: justify a conquest war goal, bring ~80k infantry and annex it
Malaysia: justify a conquest war goal, bring around 3 groups of ~100k infantry, use one to kill the home guard and then set them all to auto capture
The Srivijaya Empire gives a useful stability boost and forming it should be one of the first things you should do when playing as Indonesia. Playing as Srivijaya Empire is no different to playing Indonesia, so use that page for further strategies.
Threats[]
- The biggest threat is
China expanding into southeast Asia.
Japan is also a big threat, as it requires
Malaysia and
Indonesia to form the
Empire of Japan.
Thailand wanting form form the
Federation of Southeast Asian States.
Philippines needing Malaysia and Indonesia to form
Maphilindo Confederation.
Brunei needing
Malaysia to form
Bruneian Empire and also might expand to
Indonesia if they are strong enough.
