All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

— Sun Tzu

Deception is lying about your play-style in-game, confusing others about your real intentions, and manipulating players to your advantage. It is not consistent at all times and certain deception tactics are dishonorable, however there are many facets to the art of deception and deceiving people is often vital to being strategic in the game itself.

Notes[]

  • Deception is not about being over the top with acting and speaking all the time. Failure to deceive someone will likely foil any other further attempts.

Psychological Warfare[]

Deception is most useful in wars where you want your opponent to not be expecting things or to do certain things.

"Defense"[]

Often when invading someone you want there to be somewhat of an element of surprise. If you want to gain the most advantage as possible and pre-position your invasion forces on your enemy's border, you should ease your target's concerns by claiming it is for defensive purposes. You can also put troops around all the countries you border to be more convincing. This tactic works especially well if your nation is invaded a lot by the country you're targeting, a prominent example being France.

This tactic is situational and chances of success depend on the type of person you're trying to deceive.

Focal Points[]

In difficult wars, players often devote most of their attention and military on one front and you should try to keep your enemy's attention by launching invasions or often talking about your victories and losses in the chat to make the enemy think you're going to keep attacking there. Generally, you should be upfront with your allies and not try to deceive them unless you want to become untrustworthy, but you should also have your allies focus at the same focal point of your enemies.

By creating a focal point for your enemy's attention, you can take advantage of it by launching a naval invasion of your enemy, typically of an area of large population or many factories. However you must also make sure your naval invasion force isn't spotted when you're creating it. You should attack and create naval invasion forces simultaneously to not draw suspicion.

War Reparations[]

When you get called to a war against someone, you can send war reparations, as the enemy might try to accept all the white peaces, meaning there's a chance they might overlook that you sent war reparations instead of white peace. You might anger the player you send the offer to though so keep that in mind while doing it.

This does not work if a nation is fully annexed, as there will be no income left for you to profit from.

Delaying[]

Delaying is about buying time to build up an army and finding excuses to not concede to another nation's demands. For example, if another player demands a territory for their formable, you can lie and make excuses. Some excuses include: being in a war, needing it for your formable, or simply not offering an excuse at all and saying "soon". You can also pretend you didn't see the message if you need time to make up an excuse.

Playing the Fool[]

Playing the fool is about making other players underestimate you and making yourself seem less important. This can be done by removing titles, not saying intelligent things but not excessively stupid things either (you don't want people to think you're trolling), and willful ignorance.

For example, if you see a naval invasion, you should never draw attention to it and try to take it out silently. If your enemy thinks you're planning something, ignore them and draw their attention somehow.

Trade[]

Buy a resource from an AI country at 1x value. Afterwards, choose a player nation that has a lot of that resource and sell that resource at 4x value (or whatever value you want to sell it at, but not too high, try to keep it low enough so it does not cause a deficit or raise suspicion in the target nation).

Your target might overlook the fact that you're selling the resource, not buying it. Repeat this process until it eventually works. If it works, the only thing that stops it, is if they notice that their income is severely lowered, they get conquered or you run out of the resource.

This strategy can net you millions of dollars every turn. A strategy that also works somewhat often is selling 2 Aircraft Parts at at high value (such as 20x) to a player country that doesn't produce Aircraft Parts. People will often not check how much money the parts cost and will just blindly accept. This often doesn't work long term but it is a good way to make millions of dollars by being a total scumbag.
