The Sultanate of Aussa, also known as the Afar Sultanate, was a medieval kingdom located in the Horn of Africa, in what is now the northeastern part of Ethiopia and the southeastern part of Djibouti. The kingdom was founded by the Afar people in the 16th century and lasted until the late 19th century, when it was incorporated into Ethiopia.
The Sultanate of Aussa was known for its trade in salt and other goods, and it maintained diplomatic relations with neighboring kingdoms such as the Adal Sultanate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Ethiopian Empire. The Afar people, who were predominantly Muslim, played a significant role in the kingdom's political and cultural life.
In the 19th century, the Sultanate of Aussa came under pressure from Ethiopian and European powers, and it eventually lost its independence and was incorporated into Ethiopia in the late 19th century. Today, the Afar people continue to play an important role in the region, and the Afar language is an official language of Djibouti.
