The Sultanate of Darfur was a pre-colonial state in what is now the western region of Sudan. It was established in the early 17th century by the Fur people, who were the dominant ethnic group in the region, and was ruled by a series of sultans who were considered to be both religious and political leaders.
The sultanate was known for its wealth, which was based on the trade of gold, ivory, and slaves, and for its military strength, which allowed it to expand its territory through conquest. The sultans also established a system of government that included various administrative officials and advisers, and they were known for their patronage of Islamic scholarship and the arts.
