Background[]
The Sultanate of Ndzuwani, also known as Anjouan, is a small island nation located in the Indian Ocean, off the southeast coast of Africa. It is one of the three islands that make up the
Union of the Comoros, along with Grande Comore and
Mohéli. Ndzuwani has a population of around 350,000 people and its capital city is Mutsamudu.
Ndzuwani was historically an important trading center and was ruled by various sultanates before becoming a French colony in the late 19th century. It gained independence from
France in 1975 and has since experienced political instability and a number of coups and attempted coups. In 1997, Ndzuwani declared itself an independent state, leading to a brief period of conflict with the Comorian government. However, a power-sharing agreement was eventually reached and Ndzuwani became part of the Union of the Comoros in 2001.
