Saudi Arabia and
Oman.
Background[]
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country located in the Middle East on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. The UAE gained independence from Britain in 1971 and was formed as a unified nation.
The UAE has experienced significant growth and development, propelled by its vast oil and gas reserves. However, in recent years, it has made efforts to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil. The country has invested in sectors such as finance, tourism, real estate, and renewable energy.
The area that is now the UAE has a history of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. It was a crossroads for trade between Mesopotamia, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Indus Valley civilizations. The region was inhabited by various tribes and witnessed the rise and fall of different empires. The spread of Islam in the 7th century had a significant impact on the region. The area came under the rule of various Islamic dynasties, including the Umayyads, Abbasids, and later the various Arab Bedouin tribes. In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived in the region and established control over coastal areas. They were eventually driven out by local forces and European influence waned as the local tribes regained control. In the 19th century, the British Empire sought to secure its trade routes and signed a series of maritime truces with local rulers known as the Trucial States. These agreements led to the establishment of a British protectorate over the region, providing security and stability. The seven emirates that make up the UAE began taking steps towards unity and independence in the mid-20th century. In 1971, the Trucial States, with the exception of Bahrain and Qatar, formed a federation called the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, became the UAE's first President. The discovery of oil and gas reserves in the 20th century transformed the UAE's economy and accelerated its development. The country invested heavily in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, and experienced rapid urbanization and modernization. Dubai emerged as a global business and tourism hub, attracting international investment and visitors. |
