The Sultanate of Utetera, or Tippu Tip's state, was an Arab sultanate established in eastern Africa. During the 27 years of its existence, it was ruled by the Swahili slave trader Tippu Tip. The sultanate was inhabited by Arab traders who were in search of gold, ivory and slaves.
The sultanate was defeated by the Congo Free State during the Congo-Arab War and was subsequently incorporated into the colony.
