Prior to its annexation by the 
United States, the 
Republic of Texas was an independent state. The republic was created as a result of the Texas Revolution which saw Texans revolt against 
Mexican authorities over issues regarding slavery, government centralization and religious freedom. Ultimately, Texas would become de facto independent after the surrender of Mexican general Santa Anna.
Despite gaining independence, much of the republic's claimed territory was still under partial Mexican control. The Texans claimed all of the land up to the Arkansas River and as far south as the Rio Grande. In reality, Texas only effectively controlled the eastern part of the region. When Texas joined the United States in 1845, the country absorbed the former republic's territorial claims. This resulted in a border dispute between Mexico and the United States that would ultimately lead to war between the two countries.
After the Mexican-American War ended, the State of Texas was granted its claimed territories. However, as slavery was banned in American land north of the Missouri Compromise Line, Texas gave up much its territorial claims in return for the federal government's assumption of the state's debt. The partitioned territory was ceded to the New Mexico, Utah and Unorganized Territories. Currently, Texas's former territory makes up parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming.
